Whether you want to lose weight, be fitter or simply want to live healthier – fitness apps can be a meaningful support. We provide you with training, fitness and nutrition apps.
If you’re trying to lose weight, walk more steps each day, or push yourself through a brutal morning workout, fitness apps can help. Mobile apps are ideal assistants for health, fitness, and weight-loss because they are always with us, and they’re quite personal.
Fitness Apps: Which App is really useful?
While the others are still struggling with the implementation of their good intentions, the others have the bikini- or swimwear figure firmly in their sights. Weight loss, muscle building or more fitness can also be addressed with the help of appropriate apps. Fitness apps are also a supplement to a diet plan or a regular visit to the gym. The reason for this is quickly explained: Whether you want to lose weight or achieve a sporting goal: tracking (ie the holding of activities, food intake and the like) increases the fun of the many unpleasant measures. No matter if fitness apps for iOS or Android – the range of appropriate applications is huge.
Some of the apps in our list are tracking tools. You can log workouts, count calories, and collect stats about runs, walks, and bike rides to see overtime how you’re improving.
Fitness apps can also be coaching apps that put you in touch with a personal trainer or nutritionist who will check in with you once a week. And some, of course, combine all these things.
The fitness apps presented by us are divided into different areas. You will find detailed descriptions of the respective apps in the respective section. Our picture gallery also provides a quick overview.
We broke down our picks into six categories:
- Fitness Apps as a Personal Trainer: which offer a full suite of exercises for various goals
- Nutrition Fitness Apps: Theese apps will help you to eat right.
- Fitness Apps for endurance athletes: Theese apps will help you to boost your endurance.
A few notes about our methodology:
- This collection only includes apps that are specifically designed for fitness, which is why it’s missing popular apps like Spotify and Apple Music (which are great for workout playlists, but aren’t really fitness-centric).
- We also excluded apps that are designed to be used with fitness trackers, as the FitBit and Withings apps don’t really help unless you have their devices.
Here’s our roundup of the best health and fitness apps of:
Fitness Apps as a Personal Trainer
Athl3tics – Workout & Nutrition Plan
Athl3tics is your ultimate workout & strength training app to lose weight, build muscle, burn fat & boost endurance. Your customized training & meal plan is based on your fitness level. Build muscle at home or in the gym – with and without weights. Your individual training & nutrition plan. Effective workouts. Adapted to you and your needs.
This app is suitable for both muscle building and improving the condition as well as for users who want to lose weight. The user simply enters his desired goal and then exercises with the help of the 1,000 exercises, which are explained in short videos.
Jefit places the focus on a varied training program, which also allows specific body regions to be trained. The integrated weekly schedule is particularly handy. The exercises will be explained using explanatory texts and animations.
Freeletics pursues the basic principles of functional training. This means that the entire body – usually in a movement sequence – is trained. The intensity of the training units is very high, so that visible successes can be achieved quickly. Freeletics has begun as a pure app, but now there is also a corresponding website and a fairly large community. This is probably due to the fact that friends can compare with each other and mutually stimulate each other. The app itself is free, but most training units and nutrition plans are paid for.
Nike Training Club
Nike Training Club offers a good app for a free app and an appealing preparation. The mobile application is suitable for users who want to lose weight, as well as for people who want to strengthen their muscles or just want to become fitter. After selecting the desired training goal you can choose from about 60 exercises, including video and timer. The training sessions usually last between 30 and 45 minutes – but special programs with a length of about 15 minutes are also available.
Behind this app lies the ratiopharm GmbH and accordingly, it is not surprising that the application is available free of charge. Nevertheless, the scope of the app is quite convincing: 18 back exercises including video for training at home or in the office. There is also information on how back pain can develop and how to treat it. Advertising must of course not be missing, so the pharmaceutical company recommends the same drugs from the own house.
Similarly bulky as the name of this fitness app is also its scope. Some 1,200 exercises should be the right thing for every taste. Not only are fitness exercises included, but also yoga units. 100 predefined training programs are also included – the user can also create his own program individually. The app drives tracking and self-checking to the top. Thus, for example, one can hold the circumference of different body parts or store photos in order to be able to compare his progress better. In addition, the application includes a food database, a calorie counter, a body mass index calculator, a vitamin calculator as well as a nutrition guide including recipes.
Bodyweight Training by Mark Lauren
The Fitness App You Are Your Own Gym is among the best available applications for a bodyweight workout. This is about fitness exercises that can be performed without weights and dumbbells. Instead, you use everyday items such as water bottles, books, tables, door frames and the like. In addition to individual exercises and the possibility to create individual programs, the app also brings prefabricated ten-week programs. The exercises are sorted according to different muscle groups. The app includes about 500 exercises with related videos.
Touchfit is a fitness program for your own four walls. The iOS exclusive app includes around 500 videos with exercises and also gives tips on diet and fitness.
Runtastic Six Pack
One of many other apps from the Runtastic series is the Six Pack app. Videos with life-long avatars and predefined training videos are to help with the belly muscles training. The user has the choice between a Male or Female Avatar and then trains through the different levels. It does not matter whether the training at home, in the fitness studio or outside in the park is completed.
Tabata is an interval training that brings the body neatly into sweating and is among the most effective training methods. To keep the time in sight and not count the seconds, the Tabata-Stopwatch-App offers a perfect training companion. The free version already has some features. However, if you would like to use the full extent, without advertising, you have to upgrade to the Pro version – with seven euros not quite cheap. From the music and coaching vocals to individual intervals, everything can be adjusted manually.
Pushpress Timer Free
The Pushpress app is just as extensive. Here, too, the various interval stages can be set individually. The advantage over other interval apps is that in addition a counter with self-defined countdown time can be set. Unfortunately, the free app is a bit crowded with advertising, but it still benefits them.
Also for Yogi fans: The Asana Rebel app. The app is designed to motivate yoga regularly and adapts itself to parameters such as fitness level, goals and date calendar. Whether you want to lose weight, relax or shape, the workouts last between 10 and 30 minutes and can be completed anywhere. The app shows the individual exercises and gives instructions about how to perform the exercises. In a kind of glossary you find descriptions and purpose of the exercises.

Only seven minutes a day to train and get fit? Sounds tempting! This is exactly what “7Min Workout” promises. The iOS exclusive app is suitable for beginners as well as for advanced and fitness professionals. It includes around 200 exercises including video and voice instructions.
FitnessBuilder is looking for the same content. Around 900 workouts and 7,000 videos and pictures for the training speak for themselves. The app also provides different timers and calculation tables. FitnessBuilder is also suitable for tracing the training. The user can have the workouts either compiled by the app, or they can create their own training plan. Particularly practical in this context are the available filters for available training equipment, category and body region to be trained.
Stretching should be part of every workout. Many fitness apps include stretching units before the actual exercises. If you are training with an app without this function, you can go back to this iOS-exclusive app for stretching.
No matter whether the stomach, legs or butt – Daily Exercises Free lures with effective exercises that you can perform quickly in your own four walls to train important muscle groups. Each exercise is explained with a video tutorial.
Fitocracy relies on gamification to motivate the user. Anyone doing the different exercises daily can beat his personal highscore. The exercises will be described in detail and the app will provide a set and repeat counter.
Dailyburn offers different workouts from cardio, circuit training, yoga and more. Each exercise also provides a video and the app synchronizes with the DailyBurn Tracker – an app for capturing workout data.
Sworkit – Circuit Training Workout
With the App Sworkit you can train without additional equipment. The application creates a circular training based on user data. Users can choose either a strength training or yoga and stretching. The features include a pause function, a timer, and the recording of calorie consumption. Illustrations facilitate the correct execution of the exercises.
Strong is the perfect app to train the training day – so to speak, a personal training book. However, the app is not aimed at runners or other endurance athletes, but for all those who are using force training. All sets, exercises and repetitions can be entered manually or selected from the prefabricated ones. In the dashboard, progress can be measured and viewed.
Gorilla Workout also relies on training without other equipment and tools. The app with its 40 exercises alternates between cardio and strength training. Each exercise is aimed at different muscle groups. The user can select from four different fitness levels and receive detailed information in explanatory texts and videos.
Fitness Apps as a nutrition consultant
No matter what diet you want to lose – the right thing to do is to get the right documentation and motivation. Myfitnesspal from the sports brand Under Armor is distinguished by a truly comprehensive database, which includes not only around one million meals and three million foodstuffs, but also some 350 fitness exercises. The detection of food is facilitated, among other things, by a favorite function. In addition, several foods can be added at the same time and the user can store complete meals. The app also provides a bar code scanner for ready-made versions. The app captures not only the calories of a food, but also contains fats, protein, fiber, sugar, carbohydrates and more.
The calorie counter from Fatsecret also offers a very comprehensive food database, which can be supplemented by the user with his own entries and recipes – so you really have all the nutrients at a glance. And if you do not want to search for the food, you can simply scan the packaging. The app calculates the recommended daily requirement of calories according to the activity and displays the already recorded nutrients in detail.
YAZIO calorie counters
Use the Android and iOS app to create your personal calorie and nutrition plan, build muscle, or keep your weight. The app also tracks the calories as well as nutritional values like carbohydrates, protein and fat. In addition to the app, Yazio is also present online and scores with various computers as well as a caloric table, which is available for everyone.
The Android exclusive app combines training and food journal. The food database is considerable and includes both brands and generic foods. The data include calories, carbohydrate content, fat and other details. From the entered training sessions and meals taken, the app calculates how many calories have been consumed and burned so that the user knows how much to eat in one day.
LifeSum – Healthy living. Simplified.
Lose weight. Bulk up. Eat better. Make it happen with Lifesum. Lifesum was called ShapeUp Club, and under its new name, the App controls the calorie consumption of around 20 sports. The focus, however, is on the Kalorientagebuch, where users can capture the food they have taken. A database with nutritional information on about 400,000 foods makes this task immensely easier. Once you have entered your weight, the desired weight, the desired decrease per week, your age and your gender, the app calculates how many calories the user can consume per day. Calories consumed during the training are of course deducted accordingly.
Fooducate is suitable for all who want to eat healthier. The app not only informs about healthy food alternatives, but also proposes appropriate food to the user. Thus, the applications stand out from comparable offers, because it is not just about calorie counting and losing weight.
Noom: Healthy Weight Loss
As usual with such apps, the user also enters gender, age, height, weight, and weight as desired. The application then generates an individual plan for losing weight. For this to work, the user must record all meals and training units taken with Noom. Gamification elements should provide additional motivation.
Fitness Apps for endurance athletes
Nike + Run Club
The Nike-Run club app scores especially in the community. The app also has the standard functions, such as tracing runs and creating and adapting training plans. For all those who need motivation to run, this app is just right. On rankings lists can be compared to runs or started together with other runners as well as friends. So you can reach your kilometers together.
Running for Weight Loss
Running for Weight Loss is not a typical running app, but rather a run coach. With the aid of special interval training programs and specially tailored training programs, everyone should achieve their goals. Through the five different trainers and varied music, a motivation is guaranteed. A premium account with more features is also available.
With the free Strava app, runs or bike tours can be tracked and viewed in the overview. In the premium version even more functions are possible – for example a more detailed analysis, live feedback and an individual coaching. Strava offers various community opportunities, so that no one has to run alone. On the tracked tracks the times of others can be viewed and compared. You can also join different running groups and follow other users. So you do not miss any runs or bike tours in the news feed. Private settings are of course possible.
Komoot – Bicycle & Hiking Guide
With Komoot, offline maps, precise navigation and tips for exciting hikes, bike tours and mountain bike trails can be discovered. You can explore pre-made maps and tours as well as create your own itineraries. The app also shows you the route, the difficulty, the distance and the altitude.
With Randomrun are boring tracks of yesterday. You decide for yourself how many kilometers you want to run, then the app randomly creates a route. To go into the unknown certainly is not everyone’s business, but certainly has a certain fun factor for many users, especially in foreign or new cities.
Runkeeper is one of the best known fitness apps for Android and iOS. The app is particularly suitable for tracking of endurance sports like jogging and cycling. With the help of the GPS technology of the smartphone, the application records the distance traveled, the route and the speed and saves the data after the training on the website of Runkeeper. Here the user can log in and view the routes, different statistics and similar data as well as share with friends. The basic version is free, but the paid version brings some useful additional features.
The abbreviation C25K stands for couch to 5 km – thus from the couch to 5 km. The app is designed for jogging beginners and consists of a program that runs over nine weeks. The user trains three times a week, whereby the intensity of the training increases steadily. In the first week it is leisurely with a 20-minute unit, in which turns alternately 60 seconds and 90 seconds is gone.
Endomondo Sports Tracker
The Endomondo Sports Tracker from Under Armor is a millennium and is suitable for activities like jogging, biking, skiing, horseback riding, boxing and much more. The app is available in a free and paid version, and also offers a premium service, with monthly costs due.
Besides RunKeeper, Runtastic is one of the best known fitness apps. This app also offers a community and the possibility to record and save track and other data via GPS. Compared to the Pro version, the basic app does not incur any monthly costs. In addition to the version for runners, Runtastic also offers apps for cyclists and skiers, Nordic walkers and other athletes.
Runtastic Mountainbike Pro
The Mountainbike version of the Runtastic app is similar in many aspects to the version for runners. Practical are the offline usable maps, with which the application can also be used well in the mountains or in the forest, if one can not connect with his smartphone data connection. The app records, among other things, the speed, the approximate calorie consumption, the distance traveled and the altitude.
Fitness Apps: The disadvantages
An app should never replace a medically supervised diet. Especially calorie counters and food diaries in app form pose the risk that the user exaggerates and himself – in the attempt to lose weight or make his daily life healthier. A healthy deal with the health app requires that the user is also informed otherwise – for example in books, in the gym or on websites – and a doctor or sports scientist.
Another danger you should be aware of is the immense hungryness of some applications. It is common to almost all tracking apps and is a real data protection nightmare for many security-conscious users. Regardless of the activities, the sleeping and eating habits that you record, you must first specify the age, sex, height and date of birth in most apps.
In all of the categories discussed here, there are quite a few fitness apps, which clearly have an advertising character. Thus, apps offered by a health insurance company or a pharmacist are not a rarity. There are also advertisements – for example for a sports article manufacturer’s shoes or certain foods. This is not a big problem in itself, but you should be aware of this.
